What to Do if You Experience Sudden Loss of Vision
  • If you are experiencing a medical emergency, go directly to your nearest hospital emergency department.
  • Avoid rubbing or pressing on the eye
  • Protect the eye if injured, without applying pressure
  • Seek emergency medical care without delay
  • Contact Newcastle Eye Centre immediately for urgent assessment

When to Seek Immediate Care

Seek urgent specialist attention if you experience:

  • Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • A shadow, curtain, or veil across your vision
  • Flashes of light or a sudden increase in floaters
  • Loss of part of your visual field
  • Sudden, severe eye pain with blurred vision
Common Causes of Sudden Vision Loss
  • Retinal detachment when the retina pulls away from the back of the eye

  • Retinal vein or artery occlusion blockage of the eye’s blood vessels

  • Vitreous haemorrhage bleeding into the gel inside the eye

  • Acute angle-closure glaucoma sudden, dangerous rise in eye pressure

  • Ocular trauma injury to the eye or surrounding structures
