Newcastle Eye Centre provides expertise for all types of corneal disorders. We specialize in corneal transplantation surgery including the diagnosis and treatment of keratoconus. Our expertise includes lamellar keratoplasty (deep anterior lamellar surgery and endothelial keratoplasty).

KERATOCONUS

Keratoconus is a progressive thinning disorder that results in ‘cone-like’ bulging of the cornea (clear front part of the eye). This can result in significant deterioration of vision and may result in the need for a corneal transplant.

Treatment options include glasses, soft and hard contact lenses, collagen cross-linking, intracorneal ring segments (Kerarings/Intacs) and corneal transplantation (deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty and penetrating keratoplasty).

Collagen cross-linking involves treating the cornea with riboflavin eye drops and UV-A light to increase the mechanical strength of the cornea to prevent the progression of keratoconus and thereby avoid corneal transplantation surgery.

Intracorneal ring segments may be inserted into the cornea to improve the shape of the cornea and thereby the quality of vision.
