Paediatric Eye Services

Specialist eye care for infants, children and adolescents tailored to every stage of development.

Eye Care for Children of All Ages

At Newcastle Eye Centre, our paediatric ophthalmologists diagnose and treat a wide range of eye conditions in infants, children, and adolescents. Vision develops rapidly during early childhood, and early detection of issues is key to ensuring the best possible visual outcomes throughout life.

Children are typically referred to us by their GP or paediatrician following a vision screening or concerns raised by parents or teachers. Our team is experienced in caring for children of all ages. From premature babies to school-aged children and teenagers, we create a supportive environment that helps young patients feel at ease.

Conditions We Assess and Treat

Our paediatric services include diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of:

  • Strabismus (eye misalignment), including crossed eyes and wandering eyes
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye)
  • Congenital cataract
  • Retinopathy of prematurity
  • Paediatric glaucoma
  • Blocked tear ducts and lid disorders
  • Eye infections and trauma
  • Visual complications from systemic or neurological conditions such as diabetes, juvenile arthritis, or childhood cancers
  • Genetic or inherited eye conditions

We also provide surgical treatment for various paediatric eye conditions, including all types of strabismus. Where appropriate, care is coordinated with your child’s broader medical team and follow-up into adolescence or adulthood is arranged for long-term conditions.
