Newcastle Eye Centre specialises in the emergency and ongoing treatment of eye trauma — from minor injuries to complex cases requiring surgical intervention. Our priority is to assess and manage injuries quickly to protect vision and prevent long-term damage.

What to Do if You Experience Eye Trauma
  • If you are experiencing a medical emergency, go directly to your nearest hospital emergency department
  • Do not rub or apply pressure to the injured eye
  • Avoid attempting to remove embedded objects yourself
  • Rinse only in cases of chemical exposure, using clean water or saline, and seek urgent medical care
  • Protect the eye with a clean shield or patch (do not apply bandages that press on the eye)
  • Contact Newcastle Eye Centre immediately for urgent assessment

Eye Trauma We Treat

Eye trauma can result from many different causes, including:

  • Blunt trauma sports injuries, falls, accidents
  • Penetrating injuries sharp objects entering the eye
  • Chemical or thermal burns workplace, household, or environmental exposures
  • Foreign bodies dust, metal fragments, or wood splinters
  • Fractures of the eye socket (orbital fractures)
  • Complications from other injuries bleeding in the eye, retinal detachment
Prompt Treatment Matters

Eye trauma can cause permanent vision loss if not treated quickly. Even minor injuries can lead to complications such as infection, glaucoma, or retinal damage. Our staff are trained to provide priority appointment bookings, often on the same day, to ensure urgent cases are seen immediately.
