Corneal Conditions
The cornea is the clear window of the eye, it does not have any blood vessels covering its surface and gets its nutrition from the tear film. Corneal integrity and function can be impaired in many ways. Keratitis, trauma and other conditions can lead to corneal opacity or scarring. There may be irregularities in the surface, some of which may be hereditary.
Corneal problems such as astigmatism and keratoconus can cause refractive issues and lead to difficulties in seeing. There are other hereditary conditions such as corneal dystrophies which can be progressive and lead to loss of sight. Some of these conditions may necessitate corneal grafting. The surgeons at Newcastle Eye Centre, with the help of the latest diagnostic equipment such as the Pentacam, will be able to offer advice and treatment.
The Cornea can also be affected by malignancy. Abnormal pterygia and unusual nodules over the cornea can be a part of ocular surface malignancy and may need to be excised and biopsied.
